A History of The Heathlands Village from 1898

1898 - The Committee of the Bread, Meat and Coal Society established
      a Home for Aged and Needy Jews.
1906 - 6 Beds, increasing to 18 beds in 1st year by the amalgamation of
      the Home with the Temporary Shelter for the Jewish Poor
      Committee at 208 Cheetham Hill Road.
1910 - 33 Beds. Addition of two large wards.
1922 - 50 Beds. Addition of Home for Incurables at 206 Cheetham Hill Road.
1925 - 65 Beds. Acquired premises 204 Cheetham Hill Road.
1932 - 75 Beds. Extensive reconstruction.
1938 - 90 Beds. Acquired premises 202 Cheetham Hill Road, specifically for
      the housing of Jewish Refugees from Germany. Now called Lawrence
      Kostoris House.
1945 - Name of Care Home changed to MANCHESTER JEWISH HOMES
      FOR THE AGED.
1950 - 100. Beds. Additional Wards made by reconstruction of Board Room
      and adjoining rooms.
1957 - Negotiations to purchase buildings and land in Higher Broughton.
1958 - Purchase completed. Reconstruction and alterations commenced.
1959 - On 1st September the Higher Broughton Home was opened by the
      transfer of six residents from Cheetham Hill.
1960 -158 Beds with the Higher Broughton Branch fully operative. The cost of
      the property, reconstruction, alterations, fixtures and fittings was
      £58,000.
1972 - 5th March Old premises closed down. New premises built at The
      Heathlands Village occupied. 111 Care of the Elderly Beds - 60 single
      and 20 double rooms.
1979 - 15th July New extension (Monty Dobkin Unit) opened, providing a further
      30 beds.
1981 - New Sun Lounge. Opened July 1981.
1984 - October. New Medical Wing constructed, providing a Consulting room,
      Surgery, Physiotherapy Department (Esther Kay Medical Centre) a Sick
      Bay providing 6 beds for the flat residents (Sylvia and Isidore Suppree
      Wing) and a minimum Care Unit providing dormitory accommodation for
      5 residents (Gladys Salter Wing) - opened November 1984.
1985 - 1st November. Extensive reconstruction of the 3rd floor, giving further 10
      beds, sitting out terrace and new staff canteen.
1986 - Sun Lounge Extension completed.
1988 - 9 new flats opened.
1989 - Kitchens upgraded.
1990 - Laundry upgraded.
1991/92 - Commencement of the upgrading and refurbishment of the flats and
         nursing areas.
1992/93 - New Building Project.
1996 - Opening of Eventhall House.
1999 - Completion of the nursing wing refurbishment.
2000 - Opening of Special Care Centre, Phase 1 (specialised residential
       Alzheimer’s care centre)
2000 - Opening of Special Care Centre, Phase 2 (specialised nursing
       Alzheimer’s care centre)
2002 - Opening of Supported Living at Moorview House
2006 - Completion of new Board Room (official opening 2007)
2007 - Opening of Multi-Sensory Room
2007 - Opening of Refurbished Hair Salon
2007 - Completion of new Sunny Lounge
2007 - Opening of new state-of-the-art Cinema
